N5Prop: Anisotropic Marine Propulsion

ProjectDeveloped project

A linear-stroke marine engine whose propeller changes geometry between thrust and return strokes.

The question

Why must an engineered propeller rotate when nature so often propels without rotation?

The work

N5Prop replaces a continuously rotating propeller with a reciprocating assembly whose blades close for the thrust stroke and open to reduce resistance on return.

The program connects hydrodynamics, anisotropic structures, pulsed electric drives and practical engine design.
